Marine and coastal resources are an excellent source of food and employment generation in coastal areas. According to FAO, the supply of fish for food from fisheries and aquaculture, provides more than 15% of the total supply of animal protein. On the other hand, international trade in fishery products has reached an annual increase of 4%. However, the situation faced by marine and coastal resources worldwide is worrying , especially due to overfishing, pollution, urban development and global climate change, among others. To answer these questions, it is necessary to have new professionals with a multidisciplinary training, covering various specialties in management, scientific-humanistic and the field of specialty, which allows them to assess and evaluate marine and coastal resources and propose sustainable management measures. It is, therefore, of great importance to train professionals in the marine sciences who can support the conservation of marine ecosystems and resources at a national and international level, promoting the sustainable development of the maritime, marine, or fishing industry, where includes advice, administration, management, evaluation, education, and research.

OBJECTIVES

Apply the scientific method and the updated techniques in those areas of its formation to solve theoretical and practical problems related to the field of marine coastal and environmental resources.

Develop problem solving skills (knowledge, values ​​and ethics) in the technical-scientific area related to the field of marine coastal and environmental resources.

Apply state-of-the-art technologies that allow solving basic or applied problems to the Sciences of the Sea.

Identify, study, evaluate and plan the use of marine and coastal ecosystems in a way that contributes to the improvement of the quality of life of ecosystem users.

Evaluate, plan or advise the various development projects that have a direct impact on marine coastal and environmental resources.


DEGREE IN MARINE BIOLOGY


Description

The UMIP is the first university in Panama that offers a specialized career in Marine Biology (since 2008). This degree is aimed at training the scientific personnel required at a national level in the fields of Marine Biology, Marine Ecology, Oceanography, Fisheries, Aquaculture and Environmental Management. Provides specialized scientific training in the areas of Marine Sciences and Environmental.

Objective

Prepare professionals with a scientific background, aimed at assessing, conserving and evaluating the marine and coastal environment, using appropriate tools and proposing innovative techniques to achieve the development and economic growth of the country in a sustainable manner.

    BACHELOR DEGREE IN MARITIME ADMINISTRATION IN ECOTOURISM


    Description

    It is the only career of its kind at national level directed to the maritime-tourist sector. Prepares students for a career in maritime business administration in ecotourism related to the development and administration of small and medium enterprises in the maritime and marine sector. The graduate of this career has a high bilingual maritime training and become knowledgeable about good environmental practices especially in the marine-coastal field.

    Objective

    Prepare professionals with comprehensive training, allowing them to apply techniques and administrative tools under a systemic approach in the development of small or medium-sized maritime tourism companies, with an emphasis on good environmental practices and sustainable use of marine and coastal resources.

    Work Field

    The graduates will have the opportunity to create and manage their small or medium-sized business within the tourism sector associated with the maritime and coastal-marine conglomerate. You can also exercise as an administrative, ecotourism guide or tour operator in maritime and tourism companies, especially the national and international maritime or marine sector including travel agencies, convention centers, hotels, hostels, villas, ports, marinas, docks, spas, cruises, among others.

    STUDY PLAN

    ECOTOURISM TECHNICIAN


    Objective

    Prepare specialized technical personnel that can perform management tasks of tourism companies within the maritime conglomerate at national and international level.

    Duration

    Five semesters, including the Professional Practice Period.

    Work Field

    The graduates will be able to work within the tourism sector associated with the maritime and coastal-marine conglomerate. You can also work exercise as an administrative assistant, ecotourism guide or tour operator in tourism companies, especially the national and international maritime or marine sector including travel agencies, convention centers, hotels, hostels, villas, ports, marinas, docks, spas, cruises, among others.

    ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT TECHNICIAN


    This program prepares specialized technical personnel that can perform tasks of evaluation, planning and management of environmental instruments in government institutions, NGOs, or private national and international companies. It involves a high level of bilingual maritime training and knowledge of environmental assessment techniques, environmental audits, territorial planning, as well as good environmental practices, especially in the marine-coastal area.

    Duration

    Five semesters, including the Professional Practice Period.

    Work Field

    Environmental Consulting, Technical and/or Scientific Advisory Services, Environmental Units of all Government Entities that perform EIAs, Private Entities in charge of surveillance, control, ordering and integral management of marine resources, Companies that require environmental adjustments or implement PMA`s, scientific and/or environmental NGO`s.
